Oil spills and ecosystems.🌊🍃

Unfortunately, Mauritius has been affected by an oil spill off the coast of the island.

Around 1000 tonnes of oil leaked out of the Japanese carrier MV Wakashio.

That oil is spilling into areas of international ecological importance: protected marine ecosystems and the Blue Bay Marine Park reserve, which is a wetland of international importance. The oil spill wasn't as significant as the long-term consequences it may pose to the island and its ecosystem, since it is a biodiversity hotspot with a high concentration of plants and animals unique to the region.

It's devastating.

As this has happened before, there's a remote sensor capable of producing high-resolution data on soil contaminants could be placed on drones or satellites to help deal with oil leaks.

Maybe this could be prevented in the future.
